Who We Are

  • Built by experts in methane innovation, science and venture execution, MarisCarbon is a deep-tech innovator to achieve the vision shared with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO): a climate-neutral shipping industry

  • Methane is one of the most powerful drivers of near-term warming - and one of the biggest opportunities to slow climate change fast.

Yet methane is also one of the hardest greenhouse gases to tackle — it’s short-lived, fast-moving, and historically difficult to capture.

At MarisCarbon, our story begins with a surprising observation in nature.

    Nature showed us the way

In 2018, our founders discovered a natural analogue: methane is destroyed over the ocean by Sahara dust, which triggers a natural chemistry process in the atmosphere. This revealed something crucial - nature already has a pathway to break methane down.

At the same time, we developed methods to track methane removal via satellite and local sensors, laying the groundwork for robust monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV).

Turning discovery into a scalable solution

In 2024, we translated this natural process into a controllable technology. By innovating how to replicate the chemistry and validating the approach in an atmospheric lab environment, we proved we could reliably initiate methane breakdown under controlled conditions. Modelling showed this is also possible at scale.

This was the turning point: from scientific insight to an engineered solution.

  • In 2025, we patented:

    • our methane removal innovation, and

    • our approach to verify methane removal (MRV)

This means our work is not only grounded in science — it is designed to be measurable, transparent, and accountable.

  • Our next milestone is an on-ship pilot to demonstrate methane removal in real-world conditions and validate performance at operational scale.
